The MJO
updated 6/8/2021
One reason for increased activity is a weather cycle called the
Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). In the tropical
zone where hurricanes form above and below the equator. The
MJO is
a cycle between a phase enhancing the formation of rainstorms
and thunderstorms and a phase diminishing them. These phases
move eastward taking anywhere from one to two months to go from
one to the other. Below is a week to week chart of
the current MJO.

Dates are along the right side of the chart. We are on the
right side too, but just off the chart above Cuba since
we are not in this
zone
tropical convergence zone where there are no cold fronts
of low pressure bringing storms as in the US but
rather tropical waves of low pressure thunderstorm formation moving along
where hurricanes are most likely to form if conditions are right.
