Hurricane Floyd Evacuation: results of Hurricane Andrew winds on hypothetical future evacuation decisions: FIU/Florida Poll

click to see full-size chartclick to see full-size chart

This chart shows the percentage of people who each year said they would evacuate (would not stay home) in response to the question "In the future, if you had two days notice to prepare for a hurricane of the intensity of Hurricanes Floyd or Andrew, which of the following would you be most likely to do? Would you leave the area completely in order to get out of the path of the storm, would you go to a shelter, would you go to stay with family or friends in the area, or would you stay in your home during the storm? "

(This chart does not include the current 1999 poll with Floyd effects)

ZIP codes were used to classify respondents into the three groups in the chart:

LOWER TWO LINES
Those in areas which were in the eye or eye wall of Andrew, in south Miami-Dade County.
Those living in areas outside the main Andrew impact area which still experienced hurricane force winds (rest of Miami-Dade County, south Broward County).

TOP LINE
Those living in areas in the rest of Florida which did not experience hurricane force winds from Andrew.

Results: experience of a big hurricane makes people less likely to say they will evacuate for a another big hurricane
