Hurricane Floyd: wording of the evacuation/preparation question

The question about evacuation and other activities done for Hurricane Floyd is:

Now I would like to ask what, if any, were the things you did when Hurricane Floyd approached and then passed by Florida last month? Did you evacuate, take in other people who evacuated, protect your home from wind or flooding, get supplies, or anything else?

Interviewers recorded all answers given by each respondent. 23 respondents did not want to answer the question. Of the rest, 12.6% said they did evacuate. Since only one person was interviewed from each household, this result can be considered an estimate of households. It corresponds to 782,360 households, ±2%. This corresponds almost 2 million persons evacuating in Florida. For details on the calculations, click here.

5.6% of respondents took in evacuees, corresponding to 55 to 60 thousand households taking in evacuees statewide.

37% took steps to protect their house from wind, 15% to protect from flooding, and 51% got supplies.
